A huge win for gig workers šŸ™Œ

The Weinermobile job paying $35K

Hey there! Hope you enjoyed the long weekend (thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.). Since 1983, the third weekend of January honors the achievements of Dr. King and the role he played as a civil rights leader.

Butā€¦itā€™s actually not mandatory for companies to observe the holiday: While many do, only government workers are legally given the day off. šŸ˜¶ Letā€™s change this in 2024, okay?

Ditching the 1099 for the W-2. Last Tuesday, the US Department of Labor issued a new rule thatā€™ll make it harder for employers to classify their workers as independent contractors. In short: If the employee is ā€œeconomically dependentā€ on the company, theyā€™re employees, not contractors.

Itā€™s not uncommon for employers to misclassify workers so they can avoid paying Social Security and unemployment insurance (UI) taxes. But independent contractors arenā€™t entitled to the same legal protections as employeesā€¦and the pitfalls are steep

āžœ Severe Pay Cut. Misclassified workers stand to lose up to $18,000 per year in income and job benefits as of 2022. This gap varies by industry: In construction, itā€™s up to $16,700 less. For a typical home health aide, that number is closer to $9,500.

āžœ Canā€™t Join a Union. Generally, independent contractors donā€™t have the right to join or form a union in the private sector. And without unions, itā€™s that much more difficult to negotiate for higher wages, benefits, or improved working conditions.

āžœ  Zero Employee Benefits. Unlike their employed counterparts, independent contractors arenā€™t entitled to hourly rates at the minimum wage, overtime pay, medical leave, or have the company pay a portion of their social security tax.

Thatā€™s why this is a huge deal. ā€œThis [rule] will mean higher wages and overtime pay for millions of workers in gig jobs, health care, construction, and more,ā€ posted pro-labor media outlet More Perfect Union on X.

But letā€™s not pop the champagne just yet. The rule is expected to face a tornado of legal challenges from companies and Republican lawmakers alike, who argue itā€™ll lead to ā€œconfusion,ā€ and for ā€œmillions of workers to lose opportunities to earn money.ā€

The rule is set to go into effect on March 11. Weā€™ll keep you posted on how it rolls out!

2   This job market is red hotā€¦and hiring šŸ‘·

Huge demand. Flush with cash. Safe from AI. If one industry is booming right now, itā€™s construction. Over 17,000 construction jobs were added last December, per the Labor Departmentā€”and there are still half a million unfilled construction jobs.

  • Zoom Out: Several factors are responsible for the #constructionboom. They include a federal investment in manufacturing, a shortage of housing supply, a workforce thatā€™s slowly fading out (the average construction worker is 42 years old), and more.

And where thereā€™s demand, thereā€™s leverage. ā€œOur good people are constantly being recruited,ā€ said Lynn Hansen, CEO of Crowder Constructors. To attract talent (especially younger talent) the firm has been increasing salaries, wages, and benefits.

Kraft Heinz Company

A top dog job. Kraft Heinz is hiring ā€œHotdoggersā€ to drive its iconic Weinermobiles across America. For 12 months, drivers will visit 20 states, manage 200 events, and drive 200,000 miles.

  • How to Qualify: Heinz is looking for ā€œoutgoing, creative, friendly college graduatesā€ who ā€œhave an appetite for adventure.ā€ Other must-haves: A bachelorā€™s degree, can work on major holidays, and a valid driverā€™s license (a Weinermobile is still a vehicle, after all).

Thatā€™s cool butā€¦whatā€™s the pay? Itā€™s a $35,600 base salary plus a weekly allowance of $150 ($7,200 a year) for food and personal expenses. Heinz also offers 18 days of PTO, a full health benefits package, and will cover 100% of hotel expenses.
