1. Software Engineering Manager

Software engineering managers lead and support a team of software engineers while overseeing the development and delivery of a company’s software projects. Whether it’s roadmap planning with stakeholders or negotiating ownership and workstreams, these leaders are the glue that holds everything together.
Many managers start as software engineers before transitioning to leadership, especially at tech giants like IBM, Meta, and Microsoft, where technical expertise is highly valued.
Helpful tools to know: Jira, Trello, and Asana for project management, GitHub and GitLab for version control, and Confluence for team documentation. Companies like IBM and Microsoft also look for experience with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure.
2. Technical Product Manager
Median salary: $156,580 per year

Technical product managers make sure the product aligns with user needs, technical feasibility, and business goals. Imagine working at a fintech company, and you alone are responsible for defining and building a new mobile payment feature with stakeholders, all while ensuring it meets the security and compliance standards of the company. That’s a big responsibility for one individual to oversee, which is why this role pays so well.
We had the chance to chat with a data science product manager in govtech who makes $165,000 a year after 8 years of consulting.
Helpful tools to know: Jira or Azure DevOps for project management, SQL for data analysis, and Confluence for documentation. Companies like Amazon and TikTok also look for experience with APIs and languages like Python.
3. Computer and Information Research Scientist
Median salary: $145,080 per year

Education needed: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
If solving complex problems in AI, data science, or cybersecurity is your “bread and butter” then this might be the job for you. From designing and training machine learning models to developing new algorithms and publishing research, computer and information research scientists are pushing the boundaries of technology.
A few different titles this role encapsulates include an AI research scientist, an AI research engineer, or an R&D engineer.
Helpful tools to know: Python, R, and MATLAB for programming, TensorFlow and PyTorch for machine learning, and SQL for data analysis. Companies like Meta and Oracle often seek candidates with experience in big data tools like Apache Spark and cloud platforms like Google Cloud or AWS SageMaker.
